Description

Brace yourself for discoveries. After the tour, you will not think the same way about Yugoslavia, socialism or social housing. What you assumed was just another Eastern European or Soviet style mass of blocks, will surprise you with how different it was. You’ll see the buildings for the socialist elites, buildings for socialist business, buildings to impress the non aligned comrades and social housing blocks for the proclaimed classless society. In the years from 1948 to 1980 New Belgrade, the capital of Socialist Yugoslavia, has grown from 0 to 200,000 in population. The tour will show you how architecture and urban planning played a role in this socialist success story. You'll meet the guide in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art at Ušće. You'll explore its modernist 1960-ies volumes and find out why its precious marble facades contradict the stereotypical expectations from socialist architecture. Next, you pass by the Yugoslav Government Building, a telling monument of an earlier phase of YU politics, a building that experienced the switch away from Stalin while under construction. Your next stop is Hotel Yugoslavia, once the most luxurious Belgrade hotel, built to host the dignitaries and celebrities President Tito was receiving in Belgrade. Now, it is a construction site, as the hotel is being demolished to make place for an aspiring latest development. Our spot to talk about the Non Aligned Movement of 120 countries, whose Yugoslavia was a founding member. Then you’ll have a close up of The Genex Tower, aka Western City Gate, a 30 floor structure that has won instagrams and hearts of many Belgrade visitors. Built 45 years ago, it was the first smart building in the Balkans and entered the international architecture reviews as an excellent example of brutalism. This is our spot to break down brutalism as a style and have some amazing photos of the architecture. We'll touch upon the specifics of Yugoslav business, as the company for which the tower was built was one of its giants, with annual turnover of over 2bn USD. Inside the Block no. 23, or next stop. you'll discover the concept of providing all the functions to the inhabitants inside one housing block. The apartment buildings, school, the kindergarten, the sport courts, the mini shopping mall. You’ll hear the guide's personal stories of life in the blocks in their golden decades of 60s, 70s and 80s. And the stories of living not so well in 90s. Your final stop is a gigantic congress center, built in 1977, beating all the records with its speed of construction. It was the first building of that kind in this part of Europe. It’s still in function, after the recent renovation, remaining Belgraders' favorite place for movie premiers and concerts. Not all communist societies were the same. This tour is your opportunity for insight into Socialist Yugoslavia, a society built upon humanistic set of values which still resonate with many, despite its controversies and tragic end.
